Our mission is to protect individual freedoms guaranteed under the federal and state constitutions. In Hawai'i since 1965, the ACLU works through legal action, legislative lobbying and public education. The ACLU is a private, non-partisan, not-for-profit organization supported primarily by private donations. We are not affiliated with the government and do not accept any government funds in order to maintain our independence.

See it Now: Supreme Court Briefing 2008-09 (10/31/2008)
Every autumn, just before the Supreme Court starts a new term, the ACLU invites the press corps to a briefing where our lawyers explain the relevance and impact of upcoming cases. Now you can be at the briefing, too. For the first time through online video, you can see what the reporters saw in Washington, D.C. We feel it is important that our members and the public get to learn firsthand what is at stake. We want you to know and understand what we’re working on, because we know defending the Constitution matters to everyone. This is also a great opportunity for people who were unable to see ACLU Legal Director Steve Shapiro during his recent Hawai‘i visit.

Civil Liberties and the 2008 Hawaii State Legislature (10/14/2008)
The ACLU of Hawaii was very successful in protecting civil rights and promoting civil liberties in the 2008 Hawaii State Legislative session. Through our Legislative Committee, members and volunteers, we helped to achieved significant advancements for the rights of same-gender and other non-traditional families and worked vigorously to uphold privacy rights and protection from unwarranted searches.

His topic is “Reclaiming the Constitution–Equality, Justice & the Rule of Law.”

State to Provide Homeless Children with Equal Access to Public Education
Resolution In Landmark Lawsuit Will Benefit Thousands of Hawaii Children (08/12/2008)

Honolulu - U.S. District Court Chief Judge Helen Gillmor today approved a settlement agreement in a case brought by a statewide class of homeless children and their parents against the Hawaii Department of Education (“DOE”) and Board of Education (“Board”).  The settlement requires the State to provide homeless children with equal access to public education and remove barriers to their educational success.
